Videos: Top 10 Best Andy Serkis Performances

Posted By themoviesleuth on Movies - This is a new video from WatchMojo that lists the top 10 best Andy Serkis performances. War for the Planet of the Apes was released in theaters this weekend and some viewers may not know that actor Andy Serkis appeared in the film, portraying the main character Caesar. In fact, many people are unlikely to recognize him because he's taken on so many motion-capture roles. Even though he's probably best known for playing Caesar, Gollum from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and King Kong, Serkis has had his fair share of great performances in both a traditional format and motion-capture. New Horror Releases: Bonejangles (2017) - Reviewed

Posted By themoviesleuth on Movies - Regrettably, a slick premise alone cannot carry a film above mediocrity. Brett Dejager's blood drenched horror comedy Bonejangles is a basement level romp that fails to balance either genre and worse, it fails to deliver the goods. Featuring an above average cast, hilarious kill sequences, and barely adequate makeup effects, the film never takes off and languishes in its ridiculous presentation for its quick runtime. Legendary, unstoppable killer Bonejangles is captured by the police and is being transported to an asylum for safekeeping. The police pass through the haunted town of Argento, where one night a year (of course it’s this night) the dead walk the Earth, setting up the ultimate showdown between Evil and Evil. Except the showdown is a letdown. Keith Melcher’s script is juve

Second Sight: The Musical Mayhem of "Baby Driver"

Posted By themoviesleuth on Movies - Edgar Wright's latest offering is a musically infused crime story steeped in golden age Hollywood homages for an MP3 generation.  It’s always refreshing to view a picture that has been intimately crafted by a film lover.  Wright's meticulous design is encased in a symphony of violence and screeching tires, a metropolitan skeleton through which music is the heart’s blood.  From the powerhouse introductory car chase to the classical ending, Wright's Atlanta based urban fairy tale Baby Driver is one of the most exciting theatrical experiences of 2017.Baby is a good natured getaway driver for groups of professional thieves, who (due to a hearing disorder) choreographs his vehicular escapes to a plethora of musical anthems.  After falling for a local waitress, Baby risks ev

TV: Twin Peaks S03 E09 – Reviewed

Posted By themoviesleuth on Movies - "DIANE, HERE ARE THOSE TRICERATOPSDROPPINGS YOU WANTED TO LOOK THROUGH."Two weeks ago David Lynch gave us one of the most stunningly surreal, mysterious, and artistically bold hours of television ever made with the already-mythical Episode 8. A surreal fever-dream that tantalized us with possibilities while still holding tightly to its mysteries, it was the most purely bizarre thing Lynch has made probably since Eraserhead, and the fact that he made it for a major premium cable network is nothing short of mind-blowing. Even for a creative mind as unpredictable and unique as Lynch, the question must be obvious: where can Twin Peakspossibly go to live up to that? The first part of that answer is of course to take a week off, ostensibly for the holiday, but also to give people a chance to di

New Horror Releases: WTF! The Movie (2017) - Reviewed

Posted By themoviesleuth on Movies - After a two year hold on its release, Peter Herro's play on meta horror is finally getting a release. Like a profane teen party comedy that relies on satirical energy from its younger cast, WTF! has a goofball plot that pokes fun at our favorite genre flicks as it mixes modern themes into a better than average slasher film. Screams are a plenty. High school hallways are roamed. And blood flows from the bodies of spring breakers that just want a marijuana addled sex romp in the woods. Amazingly enough, Herro's spin on the female survivalist sub-genre is fresh and poses a new situation that hasn't been tried in horror before. Where sequels are a constant for slashers and wood dwelling killers, WTF! is it's own sequel of sorts. Our female lead has already been through a night of hell as

Horror News: The Eyes Of My Mother Director Attached To The Grudge Reboot

Posted By themoviesleuth on Movies - Based on the now classic Japanese horror film Ju-On, The Grudge was turned into a three part horror saga here in the U.S.. Now, the series seems to being once again seeing the light of day. Since 2009, the franchise has been dead and buried but is being given a full reboot treatment that will once again bring the terror of The Grudge back into cinemas. While some may shake their heads at the premise of starting the series again, but there is at least some good news attached to the project. It appears that visionary filmmaker Nicolas Pesce has boarded the movie as the director and is working on a new script treatment. Pesce's last horror film, The Eyes Of My Mother was an excellent piece of work that mixed an artistic look with a brooding terror that was both eccentric and featured gr

Second Sight: Ben Wheatley's "Free Fire" and the Anatomy of a Shootout

Posted By themoviesleuth on Movies - Free Fire (2017)  Directed by Ben Wheatley.Criminals killing each other in remote locations to the tune of pop culture anthems, while pontificating on honor and loyalty are an industry staple that has been overdone to the point of rebuking even the most non assuming viewer.  Rogue auteur Ben Wheatley has built his reputation by making films across genres that repulse and endear, creating a divisive body of work that has rocketed him to the top of any discussions involving unique working directors.  His latest effort Free Fire is a flawed, but meticulously constructed story in which the climax of the film is excised from the narrative, dissected, and stretched across the bulk of the running time. The result is an engaging example of the power of choreography, editing, and cin

Doctor Who – S10 E12: The Doctor Falls – Reviewed

Posted By themoviesleuth on Movies - Original 1960s-style Cybermen...not sure if kitsch or actually creepy.Or both. The Twelfth Doctor era has nearly reached its end with this, his final regular-season episode. But wow, what a finale it is: Peter Capaldi's Doctor could not have possibly had a better main-season sendoff. The Doctor Fallssees him rise to the full height of what his – and any – Doctor can and should be. In the face of an unwinnable scenario in which two lifelong foes and the force of time itself are working against him, he proves once again that The Doctor represents the philosophical force of good and hopefulness that we quite desperately need; the type of hero that can stay on the air for almost 40 seasons and stay totally relevant all the time. Last week's first half of this final two-parter was excellent: a

TV News: Game of Thrones To Get Expanded Episodes For Its Final Season

Posted By themoviesleuth on Movies - Most fans of HBO's mega-hit series were a little disappointed that they wouldn't be getting many more seasons of their favorite show. When it was announced that season 7 and 8 would feature the final episodes of the show, many were shocked that the cable station didn't want to extend this to 10 or more seasons considering the massive successes of the property. Tonight, there's word coming down that the episodes of season 7 will be the normal length but the final 8th season will see a change in that format. Earlier it was announced that the finale would only be 6 episodes which caused a bit of moaning. But now, it looks like each final show will be an extended 80 minute episode, which will definitely put a smile on the faces of die hard fans. Season 7 premieres on July 17th. So s
