https://www.madefromrigallery.com - It's the end of the day. It has been a fun time at the beach. You slow the pace as you walk as if you don't want to leave. You stop by the pavilion and look around one last time before leaving. You take in the waves, the smell, the sand, and the... snow?

Yes, the snow does come to the beach. When the beach is a part of your life, there are choices to make. You either run from it, you ignore it, or you embrace it. We choose to embrace what we have.

I have spent a fair amount of my life in places that were public, not forbidden, but often mentally off-limits to most.

Those "forbidden" spaces have included the engine rooms of ships (loud spaces). The lazarettes of ships and boats (often the least desirable place on a vessel). Computer server rooms (again, loud with the fans of chillers). The places "behind the scenes".

Beneath a pier on the waterfront is not a place that most people will go to.

Snow by the shore is something that makes one choose. One either enjoys the snow by an area that they consider to be a summer place or not. Either way, the snow remains. I choose to enjoy the snow and the change of scenery.

Walking at Black Point, the scene is spectacular. The rocks covered in snow. Yes, we tread with care. The tide pools take on different hues as they ice over.

The waves still roll in and crash on the rocks. The soft, white clouds above frame the scene in the dying winter afternoon light. The scenes are enjoyable.

Found History: The Old Man's Face Of Narragansett by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Harkening back to the heady days of Victorian Era Narragansett, Rhode Island. The word of the day was resorts. The places to visit were the casino, the resorts, and the shore.

The inspiration of Narragansett Victorian architecture was rock and stone. The Narragansett Towers. The Lifesaving station that is now a restaurant and churches remain. These are all credited to the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White.

The hobby of the time was photography. George Eastman of Kodak fame (a contemporary of that time) played a big role in this pastime. Tourists brought their shiny new cameras to Narragansett on their vacations.

There is cross purposing for these Rhode Island Swiss images. I have a post-pandemic invitation to show some of my work in Basel, Switzerland. My photographic work coupled with my late grandfather's artwork from years past. My grandfather is a native son of Switzerland, born outside Basel in Bubendorf. He emigrated to the United States, Rhode Island, in 1900. For many years, my grandfather was a lithographer, general artist, engrosser, and calligrapher.

The snow seems to say, "Rest. A new life will begin soon." A message of reassurance that we all need.

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - A winter storm strikes. Sands shift. A navigation channel is gone. It appears that a new or altered river delta has formed. "Delta" is the right geological and figurative term because so much changed. This is the nature of change. This is Narragansett. This is the Narrow River.

I walk to the end of Narragansett Beach and watch the water as it shifts and moves where it is not "supposed" to be. I make some quick hops and jumps to keep my feet dry. I am standing on what is now a part of the river bed. The existential feeling that I should not be here starts to creep in.

I stand observing this familiar place (I have hiked out here many times) that is no longer familiar. The sand has shifted to a geographic point that is foreign yet the same. Yet, like so many things fore

There is a change in the temperament of scenery when shifting from east to west while hiking. The air changes with where one faces the breeze. The light changes as well, becoming brighter as one walks toward the afternoon sun. So too does the attitude of the hiker change.

I was not in a bad mood on this walk as the opening quote from Hippocrates might suggest. But, I found that my attitude having spent the time in thought in the snow had improved nonetheless. Like changing direction from east to west, everything was a little different... and even better than when I started.

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - One of the greatest questions that I receive is how someone who has spent so much time on the water also is an avid hiker. The answer I usually give is that it is surprising that I have spent so much time on the water.

My time hiking is somewhat natural. My grandfather was a Swiss immigrant. They are almost born hiking where he came from (I still have his hiking staff). It is somewhat natural for me to appreciate a long walk (or a short one when a long walk cannot be had). My proclivity for this activity may not be cultural or genetic in its makeup, but it might as well be.

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - There is a very human attraction to early evening at the beach. Many go for spectacular sunsets, but there is more if one takes notice. It's not a need but does help in understanding the experience.

When arriving on the beach this particular late afternoon, the roar of the waves was audible from a distance. The air had a heavy scent of salt as the waves thundered. But a slow, almost imperceptible change occurred.

The change was the slow descent of the sun. In the east (as this photo views), the air changed and a pink sympathetic glow appeared. The waves started to calm as the air changed. The breeze that drove the surge dropped. The sound changed. The smell of the air changed. Calm surrounded us.
