I have always had a little thrill walking by hand-lettered chalkboard with the latest catch. It's part of life on the shore, on the waterfront. Sometimes one is a patron of the shop or restaurant, other times one has been the supplier. Either way, there is something comforting about seeing the fresh daily catch at the dock.

DocksideFishing vessels alongside the pier in Galilee. The sun is bright against the fog.




People often see inactivity when they see vessels at the dock on a foggy later afternoon. This is far from the truth. Right now, the batteries are being charged. There is potential activity here. Tomorrow will be very busy.

Tomorrow, these vessels packed together at the dock will start readying for work at sea. The vessels need maintenance. The equipment needs maintenance and repair. Inspections occur as lists reveal who is in port.

Active at the moment? No. Soon to be about the business of fishing? Yes.

A simple natural shingled structure of typical New England architecture. The Fishhouse serves an important function in waterfront life. This is the interface of the work onshore and the work at sea.

These simple buildings serve as the staging area of the "maritime adventure". "Maritime adventure" being an Admiralty Law and Marine Insurance term with ancient origins. This is where ice and supplies board the vessel.

The fish house is also where the lumpers will unload the fish for sale and auction

The sun turns milky in appearance as a light fog settles in the atmosphere. A fishing vessel settles in for the night. Dockside activity starts in a few hours under lights, but for now, activity has settled.

The vessel shows graceful curves in this port-bow view. The sheer sweeps from stem to stern in a beautiful sweep. Even at rest, the vessel's flared bow seems ready to throw water aside.

When photographing Narragansett Bay, I have made it a practice not to be operating a boat myself. This view is why. I love operating boats and I have a reputation as a seaman, but this is a different function. While photographing, I utilize the same powers of observation used in vessel operation. There is a reason why I make certain distinctions. I realize that the waterfront is on the shoreline. But, there is something distinctive about the waterfront. The connotation of waterfront, if not denotation, is something akin to a utility. Related to utility is work. The waterfront is where things happen.

This work and utility thoughts lead us to a scallop shell cast among bluestone or Belgian Stone. The stone is the edging brought in to stabilize the soil near docks and piers. The scallop shell is the remnant of work (and someone's tasty meal). It's not on the beach and it's not on the shoreline per se. No.

The flowers bloom and then fluffy hail falls from the Rhode Island sky. What is "fluffy hail", you ask? I see that hand at the back of the room. "Fluffy hail" falls from the sky like the snow of winter, but one is so looking forward to spring that they enter a denial.

So these flowers are not covered in melting snow in April. This is melting fluffy hail. The denial embraced in full. The beauty is not diminished.

The sun's descent is a little bit later in April. Its special light gives soft illumination to the changes that April brings. Changes that we have awaited with tense patience since the end of winter.

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - I took a photo of a garden gnome in West Kingston, RI only to find out that it has become a symbol of a contemporary issue. Yes, a symbol or victim of my other profession of maritime transit. Recently (as of April 2021), there was a ship that blocked the Suez Canal in the Middle East.

The ship that blocked the Suez Canal is free now. Well, the ship is under arrest (one arrests the personality of a ship under Admiralty Law). There will be many issues to settle including the issue of "General Average".

But as a result of this global trade "hiccup", there is now a global shortage of garden gnomes. You can read more here: Gnome shortage: Lockdown and Suez canal blockage blamed - BBC News

So, protect and appreciate your gnomes. They may become sought after commodities.

This is Card's Pond. This is on the small pedestrian causeway that allows access to Moonstone Beach. It is always calm and serene due to its protection from almost all winds.

Cards Pond is a transitional life metaphor. It's that place that we do not our destination but serves as a transition point that sets our attitudes. We go to the beach with anticipation of a pleasant experience. We leave having had that experience. Somehow, this serene image is what anchors our attitudes hours and days later.

Indian Run Reservoir and its trails are in the heart of the "urban" part of the "suburban" village of Wakefield, Rhode Island. At one time in the not so distant past, it was part of a "rural route". An oasis of trails surrounding a reservoir fed by a myriad of rivers and streams. Snowed in and frozen in the winter.

It's cold, but I walk anyway. The air is bracing and clean. The sights are as sensational as a summer day.
