Any traveler or tourist would fall in either of the two categories characterized by following traits -
- the well planned trip taker planning each and every hour of the journey to be taken and getting the travel bag stuffed well in advance of the travel hour
- the instinctive traveler (much like me) where you are mostly a journey taker in a suddenly planned trip and dont pack your bags till the last moment
Whichever kind you fall into, there is always a ruckus while planning what to take in your travel bag or precisely what stuff not to miss definitely. From my experience i decided to pen down a list of most essential ones. Here we go
1.) Bare minimum clothes – The concept of bare minimum clothes in your travel bag simply put is the least of the clothes (your Tees, Shirt or Pants etc) that you can survive with while you are touring. It helps and most of the times you do shop some new stuff from the place you visit. Keep some space handy for that too.
2). Travelling pass – This is the most important carry in your bag, Your travel tickets, passport, I-cards, hotel bookings, currencies, credit or debit cards, visitor cards. You know you cant travel without them. In case you dont have a wallet for all these or your own passport wallet, then buy yourself one. A passport wallet is must have in any traveler’s kit. Make sure you keep it handy and safe while you travel.
3). Where’s your guide – You might be one of those easy travelers having booked a tour guide or friend for assistance in going about your journey place. But believe me there is no better guide than yourself. Do some pre-travel research, do read the wiki travel page if it exists and always have a local map handy. I know backpackers would like to travel without much fuss but if there are some miles you score in saving inquiry time and avoid traveling perplexed, you better do. Essentials here – Travel/wiki guide, local map of the place, list of places you would cover, translation of basic queries and airport/railways station in local language in case you aren’t conversant in that.
4). Numero Uno Jean Formula – this one works for me in every travel in lightening my bag to a big extent. So far as i am under a week long jaunt, i just carry one jeans – the favorite one in my closet. Everyone will agree that we all do have tat one favorite jeans tat you would pick over any other. Yes that. Thats the only one i do carry and what more i wear during my long travel hours (up and down journey) so that i have to do away by carrying it in my rucksack. This is what i call the ‘Numero Uno Jean Formula’.
5). Carry light Wear heavy – If you are traveling to a place were warm or heavy clothing is required, it would help if u wear it and keep it out of your bag during your transit travels. This would save a lot of pain on your shoulders and would let you accommodate that extra book which is not finding space in your bag. I remember while i traveled to China for the first time, i was to land in a place that would greet me with – 20 degree Celsius. So a 4 kg jumper jacket was a necessity and i carried or bore it all my flight.
6). The personal pouch – Well if you ask me what does a personal pouch comprise of, i would say it is personal for everyone. But to help you with identifying your own, the must haves include your toothbrush, tissues, cosmetics, earplugs , first aid kit at least. Of course if you are staying at a good hotel or a buddies’ place you can expect stuff like towel, soap, shampoo etc at your disposal. Apart from this, the pouch can carry all such stuff which you need to use once in a day.
7). Be well charged – Carry the essential chargers you need for the trip. A common essential list would comprise of phone chargers, laptop adapters, electric shaver, camera batteries and cards.
This would make up my list of the essential checklist i would want to see through before i close my backpack and get set going. Do let me know if you find any missing here. Well that could add up to the list as well.
Happy backpacking !
