We hear it every New Year's eve and perhaps even sing or hum along, whether we know the words or not.

An ancient song from Scotland, Auld Lang Syne has been translated into practically every language in the world.  In many countries it's a tradition at New Year's, of course, but it's often played on other occasions as a farewell song -- bon-voyage parties, graduations, even funerals.

The title translates roughly into English as "old times", or "for old times' sake", or, "for the sake of old times" --  and the lyrics remind us to remember old friends and loved ones from days gone by. 

Which can easily bring a tear.
