In a busy, bustling city like Johannesburg it can be hard to break out of the rat race. To get out from the glow of the city lights and the madness of the traffic can sometimes seem impossible in this energetic, modern city. Horse riding can offer a way to escape from it all - you can soak up some sun and some farm air and relax and rejuvenate, even if just for an hour. Family Fun Many private farms in the Johannesburg surrounds offer wonderful experiences for the entire family. Pony rides or even pony camps can be arranged for the little ones, while many places also offer holiday programmes and shows. For children with learning disabilities some farms even offer therapeutic horse riding. Mountain trekking The Magaliesburg Mountain range, located just outside of the Johannesburg/Pretoria area offers a range of horse trails through the bushveld and the foothills of the mountains. These trails make for ideal day trips and cater towards a wide range of skill and experience levels. Safari Rides The Waterberg region is located three hours from Johannesburg and is ideal for weekend safari getaways. Many of the luxury safari lodges in this area offer horse riding trails where visitors can enjoy a calm ride in the bush. Spotting a zebra, giraffe, rhino or even elephant while on horseback can be the highlight of your safari trip. On the Lake A day or weekend trip to the Vaal area can be just what the family needs. Sailing, waterskiing and fishing are all on the agenda, and horse riding is also a great activity the whole family can enjoy. Relaxed out-rides are offered alongside the lake and can often be accompanied by an early-morning picnic or sunset cocktail. This guest article was contributed by Janine Mare.
