Late Afternoon On The SaugatucketLate afternoon on the Saugatucket River from Silver Lake Avenue. The sun filters through the clouds and trees casting the first of the reds and oranges of sunset.

"The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it!"

~Ansel Adams

An enjoyable aspect of photography is that it sometimes captures surreal reality. These moments of seeming surrealism only last for a moment. How does one capture that moment? You have to be lucky enough to be there and aware of your surroundings.

This was my situation this afternoon looking north along the Saugatucket. I can explain the effects in view through optics, physics and, meteorology. I won't bore with the details, but it is all about angles of incidence and reflection. There is also diffusion of light creating colors through refraction.

In short, we have an oily flat river surface and the sun is low in the sky causing the light to refract in red hues. This reflects off the river and the color strikes us.

You had to be there. I was with a camera. Here are the results.
