Conciseness, which we value highly in writing, is not necessarily an asset in music. In writing, an excess of smooth transitions ("on the other hand," "in other words," etc.) is usually a sign of verbosity. But without these transitions, classical music would sound exceedingly stark and forbidding, as indeed Janáček often does. The genius of this starkness is the topic of the present blog.
