Often, I will use the word "sound" to describe a body of water. This is from years of studying charts and has become a force of habit. I tend to be specific about the bodies of water that I am working with.
A "sound" is a long broad inlet of the ocean parallel to the coast. It can also be a long passage connecting two larger bodies or separating a mainland or an island. Rhode Island Sound, pictured here, fits both descriptions. It is part of the running off the coast of Narragansett, separating from Block Island. Also, this passage connects to Block Island Sound. Both are part of the Atlantic Ocean.
These are rather large bodies of water. This serves to emphasize that as we observe, there is a tiny ship on the horizon. And while the snow has settled and it is sunny in Narragansett, that ship is about to encounter weather. Precipitation is falling from some of those clouds.
This offshore weather is something that I tend to point out to friends. When they express gratitude or relief that a storm has passed, I remind them that we live on the shore. One of our neighbors may be out there fishing, and that storm is approaching them on open water.
