It seems like the obvious choice for a big-budget, big-screen rebooted Doom movie to come out right about now, to go with the Mortal Kombatreboot coming to theaters and HBO Max this April, and the Resident Evil reboot that is right around the corner. But for some reason, that's not what Universal Studios was interested in doing – instead, a bit over a year ago, at what would seem like the height of the revived video game franchise's resurgence, they chose to quietly slip a low-budget, direct-to-VOD Doom reboot out into the world with

Writer-director Jacob Chase produced and directed a number of short films over the last decade before unleashing the terrifying 2017 short horror film Larry about a parking lot attendant who one night receives a mysterious children’s book on his cellphone that seems to summon a demon. As the pages turn, lights flicker in the booth and a shadowy silhouetted figure begins to appear in the parking lot. So effective was this little five-minute short film, it was only a matter of time before the film’s writer director would inevitably reshape this short film into a feature. That feature, now including newly added supporting characters and a fully fledged plotline which still includes but expands upon the ingredients of the short film, ultimately became the 2020 PG-13 ra

image courtesy Constantin FilmThe trend of modern horror remakes continues with the release of the latest movie in the long running Wrong Turn franchise. This latest effort looks to kick start the entire property all over from a fresh launching point that abandons much of what was the core idea of the original series. In 2021, we've traded in one genre trope for another in a reboot that's a pure hybrid of slasher terror, folk horror, and brain bashing gore. Although it's nowhere near perfect, it's an ambitious little gem at the beginning of the year that bare minimum serves up a plateful of modern social commentary alongside its full spectrum of carnage, torture and flesh tearing mayhem. When a fresh group of liberal minded college grads head into the Appalachians for some

image courtesy Disney/LucasfilmIt's been an insane couple weeks for fans of The Mandalorian. It appears that galactic civil war is breaking out via social media over Disney's firing of Gina Carano from the hit streaming series. Again, this isn't a political page, so we're not going to comment on either side of the story because that's just not our place and we'd rather keep it straight and simple and clean. Now, Carano has attempted to hit back at the global entertainment conglomerate with details on how some of the drama shook out. After her divisive social media posts about anti-masking and voter fraud were posted, Disney attempted to tighten their grip on the actresses' social media posting. She continued. There's where things began to get ugly. She ultimately refused to bend

The graphic novel has generally made for some incredible and daring big screen cinema or televised adaptations over the last decade, including but not limited to A History of Violence and Oldboy. Nine times out of ten a hit comes out of the illustrated book form. In the case of The Empty Man, however, based on the Boom! Studios graphic novel of the same name by writer Cullen Bunn and artist Vanesa R. Del Rey, the film which came of it was completed in 2017 only to sit on the shelf for another three years before being dumped into empty theaters in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. What happened here? On the surface it looks like another modern supernatural thriller about an ex-cop named James (James Badge Dale) still coping with witnessing the death of his wife

“Are you there God? It’s me, Maud.”As someone who grew up very religious and then became atheist in my early twenties, I understand that the world feels completely different when you are religious. You see signs everywhere, demons could be anywhere, and mysticism permeates your viewpoint. Deconverting felt like getting out from the pool, the cold clarity of logic and reality hitting my senses like a shock to the system. Saint Maud (2021) explores what can happen when religious fervour overtakes one’s perception and the consequences of completely detaching from reality. Katie (Morfydd Clark), a young nurse, has a traumatic experience trying to save a dying patient. Afterwards she converts to Roman Catholicism and changes her name to Maud (possibly a reference to Saint Matilda, t

Despite having worked recently on the aging drama Edie back in 2017, you probably haven’t heard of British writer-director Simon Hunter. Though only having two other feature film projects to his name including Mutant Chronicles, the filmmaker struck out on his own in 1999 with the largely forgotten Cornwall set gothic slasher Lighthouse or Dead of Night depending on the territory. An ensemble survival horror thriller which came years before Robert Eggers’ mystifying horror film of the same name, Lighthouse is that rare overlooked debut which doesn’t reinvent the wheel but offers up a lush gothic horror tale in one of the most remote settings for a horror film that isn’t within the arctic. image courtesy WBIt seems that we're getting news almost every day or a consistent new trailer drops for the upcoming Zack Snyder's Justice League. After a couple years of fan talk and then the official announcement that the director was finally getting his very own cut that would reflect his original vision of the Justice League, the nearly four hour version will be hitting HBO Max on March 18th, 2021. Just this weekend we saw a new preview that brought Jared Leto's Joker back into the mix as he uttered the famed, "We live in a society...". Now, as reported via Movieweb, the director has confirmed that there will also be a black and white version as well that will be called Justice League: Justice is Gray. This was first teased in a black white image of Steppenwolf axing his way thr

(Image Courtesy of Quiver Distribution)As the content churn continues to eat away at the film industry and studios steer further away from anything not attached to proven IP, the erotic thriller has been lost to the sands of the 1990s. A sub-genre once so prolific that its franchises littered video store shelves the way superheroes clog up algorithms. Poison Ivy, Wild Things, Red Shoe Diaries, sexy people engaging in sex, violence and duplicity, we had it all. Now, a distant memory, the mere suggestion of something akin to those classics makes those of us who decry the sexlessness of modern US cinema’s ears perk up.At first glance, Martin Guigui’s Paradise Cove is a throwback to those seedy days of yore. With folks chomping at the bit to see the massive cinematic battle between Godzilla and Kong, the director of Pacific Rim: Uprising has revealed that he had a plan to crossover that MonsterVerse with the futuristic franchise. Steven S. DeKnight recently said that if the second Pacific Rim had done better box office receipts, there would have been a definite third entry and his plan for later was to attempt to cross over with Kong and Godzilla for a major event movie. Obviously, there are no current plans to make this happen as both franchises have not really delivered much financially. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was not a huge box office success. With the new movie getting a same day streaming and theatrical release, there's really no measuring stick as far as financials go.&nbs

Angel Has Fallen director Ric Roman Waugh’s Greenland is another disaster porn flick about a comet on a collision course with Earth ala Deep Impact or Armageddonexcept that this one stars Gerard Butler and was from Chris Sparling who wrote Gus Van Sant’s poorly received The Sea of Trees. Judging from the trailer alone, this is pretty run of the mill fare but thanks to an already very real ongoing pandemic which delayed the release numerous times, the film became a minor hit during a time when theaters were shuttered and pictures can barely break even. Plus this one’s got some surprising turns from Scott Glenn and Hope Davis in it. Engineer John Garrity (Butler) and his distant wife Allison (Morena Baccarin) life together with their diabetic son Nathan (Roger Dale
