It's only fitting that with the darkness of 2020 beginning to fade, our savior, Nicolas Cage, delivers yet another cinematic miracle, bringing promises of peace and hope for 2021. Loved and hated equally, Cage is an undeniable rarity in the acting world, with his prolific filmography ranging from highbrow academy fodder to trashterpiece classics of the highest order. His latest, director Kevin Lewis' Willy's Wonderland, is sly refutation of 80's American values that masquerades as an absolutely bonkers cult film destined for classic status. Featuring yet another unforgettably insane performance from Cage, dirty toilet visuals, and a chillingly familiar premise, this is a film that is emblematic of why popcorn flicks are held in such high regard. In a stunning (not really) bit of news tonight, Disney has officially removed Gina Carano and her character Cara Dune from any upcoming Star Wars projects. The news is breaking all over the internet with a rep from Lucasfilm making an official announcement that Carano's denigrating commentary and derogatory remarks do not fall in line with their family oriented business model. The hashtag #FireGina went viral today and was trending on Twitter and other social media outlets. We do have free speech to say what we want in much of the world. But sometimes there are consequences for our actions. We're not going to comment on whether or not we support or do not support what happened. We're not a political outlet. But this is part of entertainment. The official word came out as this from D

Prolific character-actor/part-time writer-director Harry Macqueen first burst onto the indie drama scene with his 2014 road trip tale of longstanding friendship Hinterland. Roughly six years later, Macqueen returns to the director’s chair with another road movie of a different sort. The aptly named Supernova (not to be confused with a really bad 2000 sci-fi/horror film of the same name) presents Same (Colin Firth) and Tusker (Stanley Tucci), a middle aged gay couple on a cross country trip across England to the Lake District to reunite with friends and family. Initially a talky but sweet road picture, the film shifts gears when it becomes apparent Tusker is diagnosed with early onset dementia, forcing the couple to come to grips with the gravity of their situation

With the current successes of so many other brands being turned into anime, it was really just a matter of time before this happened. This latest series from Netflix and Legendary Pictures continues the story of Pacific Rim beyond the sequel. This new chapter takes place in Australia which has been fully overrun by the massive creatures. A new set of humans must do battle to save their home from certain doom. Last week it was announced that George Clooney and Legendary Pictures are currently working on several Buck Rogers projects that include a film, a television series, and an animated release. People seemed very excited that the classic science fiction adventure character was once again going to make an appearance. He's basically been missing from the live action realm since the show that ran from 1979-1981. Now it's been revealed that Buck is being advanced forward by competing production houses. That's right. Today is was announced that Skydance Pictures is also moving forward with another Buck Rogers film project that will be working with the creator Philip Francis Nowlan's estate to transition his character to another release. There will undoubtedly be some legal work that wi

Actor/director Mark Rydell left an indelible mark on American cinema, most memorably playing the ruthless gangster in Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye before helping cement Bette Midler’s acting career with both The Rose and For the Boys. Along the way he directed the Academy Award winning classic On Golden Pond as well as the Mel Gibson starring drama The River. Needless to say, the man’s made and starred in some of the best films between the 1970s and 1980s, many of which continue to endure critically and commercially to this very day. To see his career more or less peter out in the early 2000s with his star studded but ultimately dismal ensemble film about gambling addiction Even Money is kind of a sad end to an otherwise great director’s career but here we are

After a tragic year of tremendous loss, grief and isolation for the general public at large, Robin Wright storms the gates of Sundance with a personal drama that brings it all right back to the surface with sheer force. Commanding the screen with her absolute control of the written material and her perfected use of expressive facial technique, she stands atop a wonderful creative effort that speaks volumes even during its endearing moments of silence.Through carefully inflected thoughts and intimate, nature infused scenery that’s focused on a story rooted in character that takes us to the quiet places we’ve all longed for, Wright creates a beautiful portrait of a woman personally challenged by her unwillingness to let go. Despite her pain, light shines through the defined cracks, turning

Supernatural thrillers or ghost story films generally tend towards the horror genre replete with their own sets of tropes and, for many, shortcomings. Including but not limited to the moody cinematography, the jump scare and/or a final twist, generally the ghost story film is pretty cut and dried. Which makes the 2009 multiple award-winning Irish film The Eclipse by writer-director Conor McPherson something of an outlier in the genre by placing the supernatural elements and occasional scares within the framework of a drama as a confrontational exploration of grief. Though McPherson hasn’t made another film since with his own reputation damaged after working on the screenplay for the much-maligned Artemis Fowl, The Eclipse is a rare breed of psychological thriller a

It is based on the 1997 novel DMZ by Park Sang-yeon, and it chronicles the rising friendship and tragic downfall of four soldiers who hail from opposite sides of Korea--the communist North and capitalistic South. The DMZ or demilitarized zone, is a strip of land that runs through the Korean peninsula that separates North and South Korea. The Joint Security Area (JSA), where this film takes place, is a neutral military hub where the two sides can negotiate with each other. Over the years there have been incidents where people have been killed in the JSA because tensions run high. The film starts out with a gruesome crime scene

The romantic comedy is a tricky affair. On one end of the spectrum are a host of films starring A-list talent whose Hallmark proclivities congeal into an amorphous blob of recycled concepts and borderline offensive pastiche. On the other end lies art house sensibilities, oftentimes too opaque for even the most astute fan of the genre to decipher. The sweet spot lies in between, mixing heartwarming sentiments with goofy humor, but an undeniable subtext of decency and love. Adam Stovall's phenomenal debut, A Ghost Waitsis the perfect summation of romantic cinema. Created on a shoestring budget, featuring an endearing central duo of performances, and boasting classic black and white cinematography, this an unexpected joy that will bring comfort to

With theaters still hurting from the pandemic, re-releases of big budget movies seem to continue drumming up interest. It's been announced that the Lord of the Rings trilogy remaster will be in IMAX cinemas beginning tomorrow. The Peter Jackson film trilogy went on to earn nearly $3 billion in its theatrical run and will now get another proper cinematic jaunt as it hits most major theater chains beginning on Friday, February 5th 2021. Considering there are no big studio releases this weekend, this could prove to be a success with no other real competition. After this trilogy garnered such massive successes, Jackson went on to a three movie arc around The Hobbit. Amazon is currently working on their very own Lord of the Rings television series that is said to have a massive budg

And now she stars in this month's release of Haymaker. Read our interview with the always amazing Zoë Bell here at The Movie Sleuth:TMS: Since we don't have much time, let's jump right in. You've had a long history of stunt work prior to doing straight acting. How did you get involved in the world of stunts?ZB: So I got into gymnastics. Then I got into martial arts. It was through martial arts where I met people. I would stay behind and watch black belts train. And I met people that got paid to fight and flip, aka stunt people. I just always thought they were interesting. Like Evil Knievel. When I found ou

Jordan Graham’s Sator is a personal piece for him. His dearly departed grandmother, June Peterson, battled dementia in her final years, and during that time, she claims to have been frequently visited by a spirit guardian named Sator. Encouragedby a medium to practice spirit writing, the grandmother wrote volumes regarding this entity, and would relay his oftentimes ominous messages to her family. Graham had the foresight to record these moments with her, and from that, the inspiration sprung for this horror film. Interspersed with Hi-8, 4:3, black and white footage of June Peterson and her chilling writings, Graham’s darkly stunning Sator tells the tale of a bro

Courtesy of New World TelevisionIt's that time again where we finally have a piece of news that isn't about something getting delayed by the Covid-19 crisis. While everything else is slowly starting to reopen, studios are developing and looking into whatever they can make when things get back to normal again. Yep, these stories will keep happening as the world tries to return to normal. This week, we are learning about a reboot of The Wonder Years happening at ABC. Earlier this week, ABC has given the reboot a pilot order. The show will take place in the late sixties just like the original series. This time, however, the series will be from the perspective of a black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama and how they made sure that it was "the wonder years" for their family too.

Alan Tudyk has long been a favorite actor of mine. Like many of my peers, I came to know him as Wash on the TV series Firefly and its sequel film Serenity. My first exposure to just what a chameleon he could be, however, was in an underrated Sandra Bullock movie, 28 Days, wherein he plays an addict who brings some much-needed humor to an otherwise serious movie. Over the years, he’s played comedic characters as well as delightfully sinister villains, and his new show, Resident Alien, happily allows him to blend the funny with the menace quite nicely. Tudyk plays an alien, Captain Hah Re, who crash-lands in a small, isolated Colorado town during a snowstorm. After meeting and supposedly killing Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle, Hah Re assumes Harry’s identity and spends four months isola
